History of using gemstones for healing purposes

Throughout history, people have been fascinated by gemstones and precious metals. We have used them for protective healing, aesthetic and status purposes. They were thought to be magical, protective and healing because they are natural products of the earth, just like plants. The structural components of crystals seem to hint at its universal use and its formation process can help us understand more about ourselves and the earth.

Gemstone and crystal healing have been practiced by many cultures in history, especially amongst Ancient Egypt and Greece, and India. Earlier usage can be dated back to Mesopotamia, by the Ancient Sumerians and the Middle Ages.

Gemstones and crystals were used in a variety of ways in ancient times. They were presented and used at for rituals and at ceremonies. They were worn to represent one’s status and also used as sacred healing and protection. Ancient Egyptians often used clear quartz, lapis lazuli and turquoise in jewelry for enlightenment and protective purposes. These stones were often carved and worn as amulets and talismans. In ancient Egypt, lapis lazuli was also used for makeup and cosmetics, such as eye shadow. In Ancient Greece the term for rock crystal is krustallos, which translates to transparent ice, which is reflective in the structure of many quartz crystals. The Ancient Greeks used gemstones as remedies for hangovers and as a ritual for ceremonies and protection during battles. Jade was often mined in Ancient China to ward off evil spirits. Indians have used gemstones in Ayurvedic medicine for spiritual healing and energy balancing, and it’s still used today in eastern medicine.

Wearing jewelry for protection

Gemstones, crystals and other protective jewelry are suppose to help raise or balance your energy. Similar to clothes, jewelry can help create a barrier between you and outside forces. While clothes do this in the physical realm, gemstone jewelry can do this in the metaphysical realm. For example, wearing a raincoat if it’s raining outside can protect you from getting wet. Protective jewelry provides a similar barrier of protection on the spiritual realm. Protecting your energy can improve your mood, balance your energy and tune your energetic field to attract favorable opportunities, such as love, luck and money. Even of those who are skeptical, gemstones are still a great way to always keep us connected with both the earth and spiritual realm.

Amulets and talismans

Amulets and talismans are charms that have been thought to protect our energy by warding off negative energy and attracting luck. People have used precious and semi-precious stones as amulets since ancient times. While jewelry amulets are often worn to symbolize one’s status, behind that superficial value is the intention of spiritual protection and warding off bad spirits. It is understood by most religions and belief systems that disease is linked to bad energy or evil spirits. Other traditional amulets include the crucifix, yin-yang, the hamsa and the evil-eye. All of these charms provide a sense of protection and cultural or religious status.

The gemstone formation process

The metaphysical healing benefits of gemstones come from its connection to nature, spirit and all the elements: fire, earth, air and water.

This is better understood through the gemstone formation process.

Most gemstones are formed in the earth’s crust, however peridot and diamonds are formed in the mantle. The process is similar to the formation of rocks, which involves the solidification of magma, which is the formation of rocks and minerals. The is a natural alchemical process of the fire and earth elements. Followed by the cooling and crystallization of minerals through time, space and pressure. This cooling and crystallization process involves the elements of water and air.

This process reminds us to stay solid or grounded and connected to earth. Although we understand the gem formation and crystallization process enough to imitate the process ourselves through lab created crystals and stones, there is still a mystery and a sense of specialness in its existence.

Metaphysical healing

Another way that gemstones and jewelry can operate as metaphysical healing is the same way that religion heals many people. There’s a blessing in believing in a force outside of yourself. Whether it be God, Allah, Yahweh, The Universe, etc., the acknowledgement of vulnerability is ironically a strength and a way to protect our ego. Sometimes we can put a lot of effort into something, but the results do not add up. Often this is because divine timing is at play, and there is other forces influencing this expectations. Most religions and faiths agree that there is a realm that existence that most of us cannot see. This is the metaphysical realm that we can easily forget to protect. Being humans of the earthly realm, it’s easy to protect our physical body and values. It easy to be concerned when we feel weak or under the weather. But many of us are lost when we feel like something is going wrong but we just can’t pinpoint exactly what it is or where it’s coming from. This is most likely a spiritual, psychological or metaphysical concern. Wearing protective jewelry or carrying a gemstone can provide spiritual protection, and feeling protected is a natural anxiety reliever.

Today more people are interested in New Age practices, such as crystal healing. Although much of western society tends to ignore the spiritual realm and instead be more consumed with regulating symptoms through medications.

The science behind gemstone and crystal healing

Although crystal healing is still considered to be a pseudoscience, there is actually some science behind the practice. First by understanding that Western medicine is concerned with treating and preventing symptoms. It is not really concerned with anything that cannot be seen or detected with the naked eye or higher technology. This is why symptoms can be relieved through traditional medicine, but it doesn’t necessarily prevent other illnesses from turning up. Which is why a number of Americans have a cabinet full of prescribed medications. Western society tends to ignore the spiritual realm and instead only be consumed with regulating symptoms through medications.

With spirituality and metaphysics, the balance of our energy fields are considered as a vital part of our health and wellbeing. Regardless of religious and philosophical beliefs, our energetic bodies influence our vitality and what we attract throughout life. Good health and an overall sense of wellbeing comes from the projection of energy and blood flow throughout the body. The flow of blood holds the energy throughout the mind and body. This is known as Chi, Prana and life force energy.

Stones and crystals are similar to the properties of blood and bone in the body, which are both made of organic and inorganic compounds. Blood is composed mostly of metal and lymph (water+mucous) making it an inorganic compound.

The human body is susceptible in energy transmutation. Like a chameleon, we change our energetic frequencies to match our environment. In other words, The human body tends to take on the energy of friends, coworkers, lovers and the overall environment in which time is mostly spent. While this can be beneficial for healthy romantic relationships, it can be detrimental in many other cases. Today, we carry on karmic experiences that do not originally belong to us, preventing us from achievement and having a healthy body, mind and spirit.

This is where gemstones, a natural mineral of the Earth, composed of the same energetic components as the human body, can return your energetic state back to purity. Stones and crystals are of high frequencies which help in triggering certain states of awareness. For example, turquoise is usually a blue or green color, representing one of the higher frequencies. Violet and indigo stones represent one of the highest states of consciousness comparable to the concept of God.

Regardless in one’s belief in the power of gemstones and crystal healing, we cannot deny it’s influences in traditional medicine and popular culture. None of this is really a new practice, but it has been neatly adjusted into mainstream culture and society today.
